Should I buy platinum or gold? There are several differences between the two metals, however both are suitable for most types of jewellery. The choice will ultimately depend on your preference. Bear
in mind that both platinum and gold will require similar levels of care and
maintenance. Both will also require occasional polishing or plating to keep
their shine. The durability of your diamond ring will depend more on your lifestyle than on the metal - actions that would damage an 18kt ring would also damage a platinum ring.
The main difference between the metals is colour; white gold will become slightly yellow over the years, while platinum will become a soft grey. Both can be repolished and rhodium plated to look like new. Rhodium is a metal very similar
to platinum and rhodium shares many of the properties of platinum including its
white colour.
Rhodium plating is used to make the white gold look whiter. Rhodium is very white and
very hard, but it does wear away eventually. To keep a white gold ring looking
its best it should be re-rhodium plated approximately each 12 to 18 months. However,
it should be noted that platinum will also benefit from rhodium plating.
What is your policy on conflict or blood diamonds?
Conflict diamonds are rough, uncut diamonds used by rebel movements or their
allies to finance armed conflict aimed at undermining legitimate governments.
In 1998 the Non-government Organisation (NGO) Global Witness brought to the
world’s attention the fact that rebel groups were funding their war against the
legitimate government in this way.
We believe the injury and
hardship suffered by any local population when conflicts arise in diamond
producing areas is unacceptable. We believe that seeking to profit from
conflicts in diamond producing areas is also unacceptable.
Our staff is fully knowledgeable
with regard to Kimberley Process requirements. We will provide interested
customers with copies of our policy if desired.
At Weldon's we are
committed to providing conflict-free diamonds, based on personal knowledge
and/or relying upon information provided by the supplier(s).
To the best of our
knowledge, our diamonds have been purchased from legitimate sources not
involved in funding conflict and in compliance with United Nations’
resolutions.

Why should I buy a Certificated diamond?
A Certificated diamond has been independently verified by an internationally
recognised Gemmology Laboratory, who are experts in identifying whether a
stone is genuine, natural, man-made, heat-treated or enhanced. When buying
a diamond, we know we can trust the experts at the Gemmology Lab to
grade each diamond very accurately, ensuring we buy and therefore you receive a
totally genuine diamond. However, some antique settings would be ruined if we were to take out the diamond to send it to a laboratory. In that case, our trained gemmologists will analyse it in our in-house laboratory, and grade it to international norms.
Can I view the diamond before purchasing?
Yes. Viewings are available from 10am-5.30pm, Monday to Saturday, at 55 Clarendon Street. For security reasons, a particular diamond may not be available on a given day. If you are coming in to see a specific ring, we do advise that you email or call at least 24 hours in advance.
